In the mystical winter landscapes of Iceland, the fascinating story of the Jólasveinar—the Christmas companions who live in the mountains with their eerie parents Grýla and Leppalúði—has been told for centuries.
This band of rogues is as unique as it is terrifying. But their intentions are by no means evil – rather, they bring a mixture of mischief and grotesqueness to the festive season.

Between December 12 and 24, they set off one after the other to visit villages. They sneak into houses and play pranks on people, steal food, or tease livestock. Each Jólasvein has its own personality and quirks that cause excitement among the residents. The list of their pranks is as bizarre as it is entertaining. And they always manage to put a smile on people's faces during this frosty season. On January 6, the last of them stops teasing people and returns to the mountains with the others.
Despite their spooky origins, the Jólasveinar have become beloved symbols in modern Icelandic culture. They embody the spirit of winter, the magic of the holidays, and the joy of celebrating together.
